Invisalign
Invisalign, Dr. Phan's preferred orthodontic solution, uses clear aligners to apply pressure to teeth and move them into proper position. Many teens and adults prefer Invisalign to braces because clear aligners are more discreet, convenient, and comfortable. Dr. Phan can oversee Invisalign treatment from our office in Chandler, AZ, without referring you to an orthodontist.
Braces
Braces can be an effective solution for virtually any case of dental misalignment. By attaching metal brackets and wires to the teeth, dentists and orthodontists can precisely shift the teeth into their ideal positions. Dr. Phan may refer you to a local orthodontist for braces if you have severe malocclusion (misaligned bite).

Braces vs. Invisalign
Braces | Invisalign | |
Appearance | The brackets and wires of braces are usually more visible because of their dark metals, though tooth-colored varieties may be available. Also, braces patients often have to use noticeable rubber bands. | Invisalign aligners are made of clear plastic and are custom-designed to fit precisely over your teeth. If you take proper care of your aligners, hardly anyone will ever notice them. |
Comfort | Brackets and wires can poke and scratch the inside of your mouth if you aren't careful. Also, braces patients have to regularly visit their orthodontist for tightening appointments, which can cause discomfort. | Clear aligners are made of smooth plastic that won't irritate your cheeks, gums, or tongue. Because aligners are precisely designed for your unique smile, they should fit comfortably over your teeth. Some patients experience mild discomfort for a few days after switching from one aligner to another. |
Convenience | Braces are bonded directly to your teeth and can't be removed, so you'll have to adjust your diet and your oral hygiene habits for the duration of your treatment. | Invisalign aligners are removable. Patients take out their aligners when they eat, drink anything other than water, or brush and floss their teeth. With Invisalign, you can still eat your favorite foods and care for your teeth like normal. |
Effectiveness | Orthodontists have been using braces for a long time because they work. Depending on the severity of your misalignment, treatment with braces will most likely take between 12 and 24 months. | Teens and adults who choose Dr. Phan for Invisalign can achieve healthy, beautiful smiles in six to 18 months. |
How Popular Is Invisalign?
Is Orthodontic Treatment Right for You?
Oral Health
Orthodontics are only recommended to patients who are already in good oral health at our practice in Chandler, AZ. If you have cavities, infected teeth, gum disease, or other dental concerns, Dr. Phan will have to address those before you can begin treatment with Invisalign or braces.
Responsibility
Whether you end up using Invisalign or braces to straighten your teeth, you will have to comply with certain guidelines for treatment to be as successful as possible. For example, braces patients have to avoid certain foods, while Invisalign patients must commit to wearing their aligners at least 22 hours a day. If you aren't ready to make some adjustments to your lifestyle, then orthodontics might not be right for you.
Severity of Misalignment
Dr. Phan will recommend braces or Invisalign based on the severity of your misalignment. While Invisalign continues to improve its technology so that it can work for increasingly complex cases, some patients with major bite issues are still better suited for braces. To find out which orthodontic option is right for you, schedule an appointment at our office in Chandler, AZ.

Orthodontics FAQs
Do I need to see an orthodontist?
Not necessarily. Orthodontists specialize in repositioning teeth, but some general dentists, like Dr. Phan, are just as qualified to handle orthodontic care. Dr. Phan is a member of the International Association for Orthodontics, the world's most elite society of non-orthodontists who practice orthodontics, so you can trust that he will provide expert care to you and your children.
When should my child begin orthodontic treatment?
Every smile develops at its own pace, so there is no specific age at which your child should begin orthodontic treatment. Typically, once a child begins developing their permanent teeth, Dr. Phan will start to assess what kind of orthodontic attention they may need as their bite develops. We are a family-friendly practice with expertise in pediatric dentistry, so we can keep an eye on your child's dental development from a young age and discuss orthodontic treatment with you when the time is right.
Are there any options besides clear aligners or braces?
If you have a misaligned bite, clear aligners or braces are the best solutions available to you. However, if you just have one tooth that is slightly crooked, or if you just have a minor gap between two teeth, treatment with veneers may give you the cosmetic results you are looking for. Veneers cover the surfaces of teeth for an instant aesthetic upgrade, but they don't do anything to actually move the teeth.
How long will treatment take?
It depends on the state of your smile. If your teeth only have to move a little bit, then Invisalign treatment can be completed in six months or less. However, if you have a complex case, it may take two years or longer to complete treatment. Before you begin your treatment plan, Dr. Phan will set clear expectations for how long it will take to achieve your final result.
Will my results be permanent?
Teeth are always on the move. Braces or Invisalign will give you a straight smile, but if you don't utilize some kind of retainer, your teeth will shift again over time. Most patients only have to wear retainers at night while they sleep. Some Invisalign patients are able to keep their last set of aligners as retainers.
Improve Your Results with Cosmetic Dentistry
Once you achieve the straight smile you've always wanted, you can work with Dr. Phan to further improve the appearance of your smile. At our Chandler office, we offer several cosmetic services, including professional teeth whitening and dental veneers. As a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Phan is supremely qualified to upgrade the appearance of your smile.
